Modified Atmosphere Packaging solution helps improve melon quality
In 2024, the Breatheway team partnered with a leading melon shipper, where product was shipped from Central America to Japan. After 46 days of storage, transit, and evaluation, Harper melons packed in Breatheway packaging showed an 86 percent improvement in surface mold, 91 percent improvement in sunken spots, and 44 percent improvement in chilling injury compared to the customer's existing MAP bags. These significant quality enhancements translate to reduced shrink at retail stores, extended shelf-life, and a better eating experience for consumers.
"This technology helps minimize mold and decay, reducing the risk of rejections or price adjustments at the destination, ultimately protecting and enhancing returns for shippers," says Hazel's VP of postharvest, Malkeet Padda. (Right)
As part of a range of packaging solutions – including pallet bags, case liners, and individual retail pouch bags – Breatheway membranes are tailored to fit unique operations, with a dedicated team of experts helping to guide their customers.
"We are actively expanding into new geographies and targeting a diverse range of crops, with a focus on reducing food waste, increasing customer revenue, and enhancing quality for end consumers," says Padda.
